He proposed. Yeaahhh.

You'll probably spend a few days telling loved ones and showing off your engagement ring (depending on which side of the continent you live). You'll quickly realize that you have a ton of preparation to make before the big day. An engagement or intention to marry is the start of months of meticulous planning, which includes meetings with family members, churches, planners, fashion designers, caterers, entertainers, and so on.

Even though weddings are joyous occasions to look forward to, most couples (especially the ladies) find that the stress that comes with planning their ideal wedding actually causes them to be weary. Lack of support from family and friends, misunderstandings and uncooperative attitudes from role players, financial constraints, and overall stress from wedding planning could all be reasons why couples do not joyfully anticipate the wedding day. Weddings are among the top ten most stressful life events, according to research, with most of the stress arising from conflicting opinions about wedding details.

Planning a wedding (or any other event) is not a task to be taken lightly. A 2018 study by Zola, revealed that 96% of more than 2,000 couples who planned their weddings said it was stressful. The statistics may not be different from Ghana and anywhere else in the world. Coordinating and keeping tabs on many vendors, as well as performing many tasks yourself can be pretty daunting and onerous.

"It was overwhelming to say the least. I never knew it was so stressful to plan a wedding especially since my husband and I practically had to do everything alone," says Yvette Manson. She definitely would do things differently if she knew better. "A wedding planner would have eased all the stress we went through and handled our event better. I’m now convinced that not having a planner is rather expensive," she says.

The scenario was not different for Nana Akua when she was getting married. "It was tiring going all over the city and even beyond to get things done," says Nana. "I would because it really saves time and again relieves pressure," she said, wishing that she would've known about the stress and advantages of hiring a wedding planner before hand for her wedding.

Out of 15,200 US couples, 32 percent of couples getting married hired professional wedding/event planners.

It appears that couples frequently see the value of a wedding planner when it's too late or the event has already occurred. The excitement that accompanies a wedding announcement combined with a lack of knowledge about the services provided by wedding planners, often leads to couples attempting to complete the difficult task on their own.

"It was exciting and overwhelming looking for vendors to get things done on time. Eventually I couldn't pamper myself as a bride-to-be," says Irene. For Irene however, despite her knowledge of the benefits of a planner, she couldn't afford one at the time of her wedding. "A wedding planner would have taken care of all the stress but I couldn't afford to pay for one as of that time," she says.

Compared to prior years, more people are using the services of wedding planners. A 2021 study by The Knot revealed that out of 15,200 US couples, 32 percent of couples getting married hired professional wedding/event planners. Hiring a wedding planner may seem like a big investment but couples who’ve used their services have attested to how it relieves them of a lot of stress and gives them time to concentrate on other things. Professional wedding planners seem to know and tend to have a working relation with good vendors and understand how they work. They’re experienced and understand the various roles that need to be played to ensure a successful event. They also find solutions to roadblocks that may arise during the planning or the event.

A full-time professional planner may assist you with selecting a location, selecting colours, organizing the layout of your venue or reception, recommending vendors' services and goods, and coordinating the vendors' activities on the big day. The tasks required of a full-time wedding planner may appear to be endless, but their ultimate goal is to ensure that your dream day does not stress you out, but rather serves as the source or start of a blissful marriage journey with your spouse.
