It has become necessary to highlight certain key guidelines that wedding guests are expected to follow.
Here are a few that you need to know:
1. Be punctual
Don’t be late. Yes, Ghanaian events tend to start late (which isn't good), but don't use this as an excuse to be late. Arriving an hour or more late to a wedding with the expectation that it will not begin on time is inappropriate. Be on time and use it as an opportunity to familiarise with other guests.
2. Don't take attention from the couple
Dress appropriately. Avoid overdressing or making a statement about yourself. The bride and groom deserve all the attention. In your respective field as a guest, caterer, MC, usher etc., DO NOT draw attention to yourself ... yoooo.
3. Don't invite an uninvited guest
Don't bring people who weren't invited. If you were invited, please come alone. You don't want to contribute to a lack of chairs, food and/or drinks. If you weren't invited, do not show up. Don't tag along someone who has an invitation.
4. Avoid wasting food
Avoid piling too much on your plate. A wedding invitation is not an excuse to consume everything that's being served. If you want another helping, put a little on your plate at a time.
5. Keep out of the photographers' way
Enjoy the moment without your phone or camera, and give the official photographers and videographers room to work. Photo and videography services are not cheap. They've been paid to document the day for the couple, so keep out of their way.
6. Don't go empty-handed
Gift tables are set up for a reason. Make a contribution to the event in some way. A donation or present will go a long way to assist the couple cover some of their expenses or it can serve as a token of appreciation for being invited.
7. Participate in the event
Don't be a boring guest. Be part of the event. Follow the MC's cues and support the band or DJ by bobbing your head or grooving to the beat.
